NewQuake does not use advertising and does not track you across apps or websites.
Location. When you grant location access, your device location is used on-device to display the distance from you to earthquake, tsunami, and volcano events, to apply your alert proximity setting, and to place shaking recordings made by the seismometer. It is not transmitted off-device unless you turn on Share for research, described below, and it is never shared with any third party.
Share for research. Test versions of NewQuake offer an optional Share for research setting, off unless you turn it on. When it is on, NewQuake sends our server each shaking recording the seismometer saves, the raw motion measured in the minutes around nearby earthquakes, and a record of when your iPhone was measuring. Each file carries your location rounded to about 1 km, which way the phone faced, its battery level and whether it was charging, its temperature state, your iPhone model, the iOS and app versions, where you said the phone is placed, and a random study identifier that links your files to each other and to nothing else. We use these files only to improve shaking detection. They are kept on our server for 30 days and then deleted automatically. Turning the setting off stops sending and deletes anything not yet sent. Delete shared data removes everything already sent and starts a new study identifier.
Notifications. If you enable push notifications, your APNs device token is stored on our server solely to deliver earthquake, tsunami, and volcano alerts. No account, name, email address, or location is associated with the token. If you disable notifications in NewQuake, the token is removed from our server. You can also request deletion at any time using the contact address below.
Diagnostics. NewQuake uses Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) as a data processor to collect crash reports, performance diagnostics, and related technical logs so we can fix reliability problems. A report carries an anonymous install identifier, a random value with no connection to you or your device, so that repeated reports from one installation can be recognized as one. It carries no account, name, email address, or location, and IP addresses are discarded at collection rather than stored.
Diagnostics are used only to keep the app working. They are never used for advertising or tracking, are never sold, and are not shared with anyone other than Sentry, which processes them on our behalf under its own security and data-protection commitments (sentry.io/security) and does not use them for its own purposes.
Diagnostics retention. Sentry stores diagnostics for 90 days and deletes them automatically after that. We keep no separate copy. Deleting NewQuake from your device stops any further diagnostics being sent. Reports already sent carry only the anonymous install identifier, so we cannot connect them to you in order to single them out. They expire on the same 90-day schedule. If you want reports removed sooner, write to the contact address below and we will delete the diagnostics we can identify from what you can tell us.
Data sources. Event data is fetched from public agencies (USGS, EMSC, JMA, NOAA, GDACS). NewQuake does not send any user data to those agencies.
Safety. NewQuake is informational and may be delayed or incomplete. Follow official local emergency guidance for safety decisions.
